General introduction

The Archives keep the historical and administrative documents of the Université libre de Bruxelles, the University's official printed documents, collections from the university community including student newspapers, iconographic collections, and also the personal papers of the University professors.

The Special collections contain the rare and valuable books and documents owned by the Université libre de Bruxelles. Thanks to our acquisition policy, new publications are regularly added to the collections, mainly from unique and specialist publishing houses.

The Department of Archives, heritage and special collections was created in 2007 when the Department of Archives and Special collections were brought together to create a major documentary collection for scientific research. This collection contains all the official, administrative and historical documents of the University, the personal archives of the university community members and student movements, as well as thematic published collections, and library bequests considered to be valuable and necessary for research. The extensive sources kept at the Department of Archives, Heritage and Special Collections of the Université libre de Bruxelles bear witness to the history of knowledge and the professions, higher education institutions and scientific disciplines in Belgium as a whole.
